You have to take the optimal turning path. Basically if you are on the inside edge of a sharp turn that is a no-no. You want to be on the outside edge and turn into the apex of the curve. The goal is to retain as much speed as possible in the turn, because even if you take a longer path in the turn you are still more than likely going to make up for that extra distance traveled if you maintain the extra speed.
