A problem I have heard repeated several times from people within the medical industry is that the education and training of doctors is really only good at getting people with good memorization skills, and it tends to prevent people with solid logical-reasoning skills (common sense) and people skills from ever becomming doctors. This is just another example of a doctor who didn't have the common sense or empathy to understand the patient.
