Well let me put it this way, how far can a large group of people with young children and elderly walk in a day? They also have carts of gold and other things they are bringing along with them. How far is Egypt from "The Land of Milk and Honey" using the path they walked? They were provided for along the way when they needed it. Water from a rock, bread on the desert floor every morning, cloud cover every day they walked to help them stay cool, and pillar of fire to keep them warm at night.
Did you know that they wandered in circles on purpose in the desert for 40 years? If they thought the rules were fake don't you think they would revolt? Even after getting delivered from Egypt safely, walking straight through the Red Sea on dry land, while the water stood towering above their heads, and all of the other small miracles that kept them alive, don't you think that some people would think Moses could be tricking them and might get sympathetic supports to overthrow Moses if any of these things were false?
