NDP candidate in Victoria-area riding resigns over naked swimming incident
VICTORIA — The federal New Democrat candidate for the B.C. riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands has resigned.
Julian West issued a statement Tuesday morning.
West apologized on the weekend for an incident 12 years ago in which he removed his clothes and swam naked at a retreat where children were present.
He says he made a "serious error in judgement," although he noted nothing else inappropriate happened.
He says he has informed the party of his decision and does not want his "candidacy to detract from the issues that should be front and centre in the campaign."
West is the third NDP candidate in B.C. to step down amid controversy, including two who resigned over their actions in support of legalizing marijuana.
Also, what is your stance on the whole controversy regarding cuts to artistic endeavors? I see it as a non-issue, but the media seems to say otherwise.
