Most other exclusives wouldn't help the 360 one iota against Wii IMHO but would sure reduce the average score for its library of games. Also in many cases I think to have any chance most games would need a texture/graphics overhaul for 360 - something that would add further cost.
The other factor is simple. MS is much better at copying and refining than true innovation in games IMHO. It's done so by hiring well and focusing on key strengths, like Live - but remember Live and games like Halo and online MP were essentially built on existing PC games/online approaches, Live is not something totally original IMO, just the first successful online on consoles (that I'm aware of).
The Wii and its best games take a different mindset I think, one not built around making it bigger, faster, etc. but something much quirkier. Therefore for MS copying it will be much harder than Sony, which was an easier target in many ways:
create decent HD console (generously ignoring RROD here BTW) - check pay for decent games from established players in known genres (Epic, etc) - check create and refine an online experience built upon PC MP roots - check use buying power to erode traditional Sony third party exclusives - check create easy to use SDK and court third party developers heavily - check get the damn thing to market fast to gain a lead with both consumers/developers - check
Now, in my opinion if you look at the above almost none of it is any use against Wii:
The Wii isn't even HD and having a more powerful console wouldn't seem to be the answer. The core Wii titles are all first party and beyond reach The Wii is about playing together in the same room, and not overly affected by Live
Finally, I do believe (as Peter Moore spoke about) that MS focused their whole strategy on Sony... which leaves them in a tricky position vs Wii as they're not really set up on any level to try and compete with it. And of course given they have done well against Sony MS must be wondering whether to hope Wii in a one gen thing for Nintedo and keep hammering away at Sony or whether to try and do something against it and risk giving Sony breathing room in the process...
Sorry this is long, but I just think that for MS the Wii isn't something that can be tackled by getting a checque book out and trying to use money to gain a competitive advantage (or reduce the Wii's)... and that fact alone probably makes it a very hard foe for MS to consider as historically most of their solutions at the end of the day rested on using money and their global reach rather than quirky innovation.

I think you're not understanding where im coming from. A lot of your points agree with my thinking except that the angle I was looking for was not about beating the Wii, its about providing a service/console that people value in order to profit from it like any business works. The whole ethos of Xbox Live Arcade invalidates the argument that the Xbox 360 and that the games available are completely different in design/style to the Wii.
The whole point of combining a media remote and a motion controller is that its a synergy which works well to improve both the media functionality of the system whilst providing people with a greater variety of fun games to play. Its really that simple. If the link I posted is of any indication there are a lot of games which would be great for Xbox 360 owners to have and would be apreciated by potential/current owners.
