When is a good month to go to England and Ireland?

So I'm going to go to England and Ireland...eventually...and I want to know a good time to go.  I had heard that September was a good time but that chance has obviously gone out the window.

So, when is a good month?  The wife doesn't want to go during the real cold time so that's out of the question.
