There's a place for both. You can't logically get a 16 man battle going in local co-op but you can online. Overall I think most people would prefer to play face to face, but there are downsides to it. It's not as easy to get people over to play games than it is to start an online match. Some people just don't have the luxury, especially later in life, of having gatherings all the time to play games, because so much more goes into it. Food, drinks, and basically making an event out of it. Jumping in and out of online is just very convenient for a lot of lifestyles.
Outside of that little tidbit, I don't really have much else to say about the study.
