I had mine removed, yet I still get occasional jaw pain. It was about 7 years ago and it was a cinch for me. Not much pain, minimal swelling and bleeding. Unlike the last time I had a gum transplant (removing gums from your palate to strengthen receding gums from your teeth) because I got an infection that caused my mouth to smell like a horse died in there.
You might not like my trick (which I have little scientific backing for): wait a day so that the wounds are somewhat sealed, then chew (EDIT) and swallow 1 garlic clove or 2 before bed (you might need to have tomato juice in your mouth so it doesn't burn you). I think the antiseptic properties of garlic will prevent infection. You have to wait a day though because garlic also reduced blood coagulation. As an added bonus, it will fend off vampires (friends and a family too).
