Current numbers are obviously open to some speculation. But anything a month or two in the past, especially in North America and Japan, is very solid. And there's a 620,000 discrepancy between the 4.28 million Sony said they sold and the 3.66 million we say they sold, and that's not because we're wrong, but because we're reporting two different things -- 4.28 million sold to retail, 3.66 million sold to customers.

I think a lot of this confusion comes from foreign sites not translating the financial report properly.

Launch to date totals for the PS3:

At the end of March 2007:
5.5 million produced
3.6 million sold to retail (1.9 million in transit/in Sony warehouses)
2.8 million sold to customers (800,000 on retailer shelves or on their way there)

At the end of June 2007:
6.6 million produced
4.3 million sold to retail (2.3 million in transit/in Sony warehouses)
3.7 million sold to customers (600,000 on retailer shelves or on their way there)

That's as detailed a breakdown as I can give and it all comes directly from each of the respective financial reports and the data available here. Our data for back then is pretty good by now, even for Europe as they've released quarterly data reports for many regions now too.

superchunk it just comes off as him seemingly intentionally posting false/misleading information to get a rise out of people, that's still trolling even if it isn't of the console/fanboy variety. :p
