If you can still play on an HDTV, then yes, just remember to change the settings when you plan on the big screen to HDMI, then change back the settings from HDMI->Components when you take it back to your room.
Also put it in the living room and rent a couple of movies on Blu Ray that your parents would like and after they see how clear the picture is it'll be easier to convince them to keep the PS3 in the living room.
