That is much clearer. MS will likely not completely offset loses on this generation. But then, that's not their worry. They're trying to get a larger foothold in the market, and that's usually done via selling at a loss.
Sony, on the other hand, is losing money on every unit sold and is losing money on PSN (it isn't free to operate, yet they don't charge for it). Why are they doing this? They spent a fortune on the PS3 design, production, etc., and are desperate to stay in the market with a comparably selling competitor (the PS3 is "slowly" closing the gap to 360 numbers) and a competitor that has dramatically better sales (Wii). The PS2 left the others in the dust last generation. The PS3 is struggling for a distant second place behind the Wii.
So, tell me... why does Sony do it? Please help me to understand.
