It's different schools of thought, like American movies versus foreign flicks.

The typical American flick is all explosions and effects - basically what FPS brings..

Whereas, the foreign films are a bit more substance, like story, character, art direction, etc. Aside from the art, FPS this is not. This is probably why games like Uncharted are more popular in EU than US.

I imagine, in Japan, it's a whole new set of video game ideals. Maybe more story centric than anything, hence the RPGs.
