That's flat wrong. If you were paying attention then, you'd know that there wasn't much for maybe a week after launch, but after that there was a steady trickle of supply. I got one a week and a half after a coworker, and we both got them instantly when they were available (which was the only way, as they didn't sit around, even with bundles) at different post-launch, pre-Christmas times.
And yes, Microsoft did use planes. This is a matter of record, and you can easily look it up if you're not just trolling.
