What is this? The PS3 has only made things worse for the PS4 by losing so much marketshare. Also, when we talk about console domination, the focus should not be on the hardware - this gen should have woken everyone up from that nonsense. It's all about the software. Sure, Sony's 1st party is huge. However, they have not shown us if they are capable of capturing the mass market like Nintendo has. Besides Gran Turismo and Crash Bandicoot (who's now dead), they have yet to make a game that has cracked the 4 million mark. Sony will have an uphill battle. They will not be able to take losses like they did this gen, and they lost their lead position to Nintendo. This isn't the same Nintendo from the GC days, either - this Nintendo has been pumping out multiple 10mil+ sellers per year. That isn't something you can ignore. Microsoft probably isn't going anywhere either. |
So nintendo lost plenty of market share over the past two generations.
I think the first thing we should talk about is profitability of hardware in Sony's case. They will be able to release a machine that is powerful and profitable. That is a good position to be in.
As far as software is concerned, you don't have to have Nintendo level sales to make money. It's nice don't get me wrong, however if your hardware is also profitable as well as maintaining decent software sales you will be fine.
Not to mention i still think that Sony Europe will come up with plenty of casual franchises to carry to the ps4. The cancelling of getaway seemed to indicate to me that sony wants them to take that route and release more casual software that they are good at as opposed to mediocre core titles. If LBP being one of Sony's big titles this year doesn't represent a change in mentality then i'm not sure what it would take for people to see. Sackboy is after all thier new mascot.
Having a console that can market to many types of gamer doesn't seem like a bad idea to me as ps/360 software does still sell pretty well. Not to mention being a vehicle for other forms of profit such as multimedia. I think with thier size and new vision they might be able to tread the line quite well.
