Sony's financial year ends in march. In the FY ending march 2008, they made a loss. In the first quarter of the FY 2008 (april-may-june) Sony made a small profit.
MS' fiscal year ends in june. They made profit in that year, but they lost money in the last quarter of the year (probably due to the price drop of the 360 in Europe).
