Realistically, how many people are naive enough to believe that either politician will govern the country in a way that matches their campaign promises? What makes you think that the general population is so much more gullible than you?
At the end of the day, people end up voting based on a gut reaction because it is a far more accurate barometer for most people than what a politician says. Many politicians play against this by trying to introduce strong feelings about their opponents which may or may not work.
