Dude, the bird-thing before magic staff is the first boss of the game. It might be a bit earlier to call things off, isn't it?
Anyways if the bird boss got to you, wait till you reach the boss at the feet of magic staff - now that's a real bugger. After those two fights the game becomes a bit easier while remaining challenging because it caps grinding (you can't mass-grind to steamroll bosses). Later on you won't want your immortals to die because of the wall mechanic - chars at the front soak up damage for chars at the back, if your front guys get knocked the vulnerable casters will get vaporized. Also self-rezz'd inmortals lose the buffs and these become very important mid-game.
Rings will become very relevant - they basically "color" attacks with elemental properties and are used to exploit elemental vulnerabilities (plus some other bonuses...). The story also improves soon enough. IMHO it holds up until the 4th disc when it morphs into standard FF-fare.

Considering it comes from the creator of FF, that shouldn't be suprising

God forbid Sakaguchi created an scenario without alien/extradimensional artifacts to be used by the evil villain to take over the world. I mean, it's only been 20+ years of games based on that.
