Some of them just stopped going to class, others made idiotic decisions like get a tatoo they really didn't want (not life ruining, but still sucks), lost scholarships, shut out friends, lost their wife/girlfriend, lost all their money, and one guy got shot while buying their drugs.
You know, little things.
Of course just about all those people insisted that their drug use wasn't a problem.
