You don't have to become a 100% vegetarian. Just cutting back your meat portions and/or the amount of your meal that involve meat is a good start (for your health and apparently the environment).
And it is not just animal flatulence, it is also the shear amount of manure that industrial farming produces (which then gets sprayed on vegetables which then leads to them being recalled because they are now contaminated with bacteria that exists in feces), the amount of grain and water it takes to produce 1 kilo of meat (that grain and water could be used to feed the poor) and the forest that need to be chopped down to store the industrial animals and plant the foods they eat.
Overall, it would be better if people at least cut back. In western cultures, a normal meal often involves a slab of meat (steak) whereas in other cultures, they use smaller quantities of meat to add flavor to other recipes. The luxury of a slab of meat per average person with 1or 2/3s of every meal is a foreign concept for most cultures.
