I'm a guitarist, but the two are pretty similar, so I suppose I could help you out.

Though bass is far from my area of expertise.

First tip: Never use a pick. The best bassists don't, like Steve Harris, Cliff Burton, etc. :P

My first tip would be: NEVER take advice from someone who admits a lack of knowledge on the subject.

I use both fingers and pick, it's just a matter of what the job calls for.  Explore a variety of styles!

Second tip: Guitar Pro 5  http://www.guitar-pro.com/en/index.php   Absolutely worth it!

You can get free tabs for it here:  http://www.tablatures.tk/

If you're going to play in a cover band then check out YouTube for live performances of the songs you're doing.

BTW, one of the coolest bass lines ever was played with a pick.

Pick vs. No pick:

Really depends. Something like Blink 182 Carousel will kick your ass without a pick.

Close up of him playing in like 35 sec mark

Slap bass (Red Hot Chili Peppers) doesn't use pick.

Finger strumming would be jazz type music.
