and the reason the game looks gritty is because of the pre-processing effects (lighting, environment, weather etc.) the char. models may have exactly or more geometric complexity than an entire level in kz one.  if the level effects were to be turned off, the game would look completely different, as stated in interviews and from the developers themselves.
