My first tip would be: NEVER take advice from someone who admits a lack of knowledge on the subject.

I use both fingers and pick, it's just a matter of what the job calls for.  Explore a variety of styles!

If you're going to play in a cover band then check out YouTube for live performances of the songs you're doing.

BTW, one of the coolest bass lines ever was played with a pick.
