It left both combatants bruised and bloodied. Both made bad business decisions (No Nintendo Playstation, CD-I; 32X, Sega CD).

It left things in such a state that a new company came in and took over the market. Sega never recovered as a hardware company while it took Nintendo more than a decade to resume the top spot.
