It depends. I stare at surface textures, environments, and lots of other things in Metroid Prime 1, 2, and 3 all the time, and it's never changed no matter how many times I've played the games, but I have gone through the same thing you did with Wind Waker, so I guess I have a little bit of both sides when it comes to these things.
