Unless you're going to raise the pirate flag you're going to be stuck shelling out at least 200 dollars for a functional copy of Windows in most cases. MAYBE 160 if you find the right OEM deal.
Personally I have no issue if you want to pirate Microsoft, I didn't even though I HATE them (Idiot I am I own both a legit copy of XP pro, then when I couldn't get it to see my wireless one day and wanted to try direct X 10 I used Vista Ultimate which is way way worse) but after using Vista I encourage all to pirate Vista. That will save you money since you won't have shelled out 200 dollars to be so appalled by Vista that you go back to XP.
Thank god I only have to use Vista/XP for gaming, if it was my main OS I would go insane.
