| Auron said: So imight get a 360 soon and the only reason i would ever get this piece of HW is due to the number of JRPGs on the system. So give me the rundown on the good and the bad JRPGs on the system and your reasons why. May include upcoming titles. |
Here are the current ones I've played, and a few I haven't:
| Game Name | IMO Score | Positives | Negatives | Verdict: |
| Lost Odyssey | 9.0 | Fantastic take on the FFX-esque battle system by Sakaguchi. Good story, and beautiful writing in the Thousand Year Dreams. Very good graphics, perfect musical score, very good VA. 60+ Hours | UE3 engine isn't perfect, and there are some technical hangups. The game's combat is very by-the-book | If you want to re-live classic JRPG-turned 128bit, get this game. Awesome game. |
| Tales of Vesperia | 8.75 | Perfect, deep combat system. Solid & lighthearted storyline. 4 player co-op battle system. Good VA and musical score. 60+ Hours | At points, may be too light hearted. I haven't beat it to make any fleshed out neg. comments. | I'm about 5hrs in, and ToV may be the best JRPG on the X360, and best ARPG ever. |
| Blue Dragon | 8.75 | Beautiful graphics. Classic Uematsu soundtrack. Very good job class system. A true emulation of classic Dragon Quest-esque gameplay. 50+ Hours | VA sucks for the most part. Story is kind of by-the-book. | Great compliment to Lost Odyssey, but more..Cartoony. Which may be a good thing. |
| Eternal Sonata | 8.0 | GORGEOUS CELL SHADED GRAPHICS. Awesome musical score. Good combat system, and passable VA. 30+ Hours | Confusing storyline. Combat system gets shallow later on. Unbalanced economy, and rather easy toward the end. | Not as good as ToV key respects, but a good compliment, as the GFX are crisp. Has 3p Co-Op which gets a good score from me. |
| Culdcept Saga | 7.75 | Pokemon TCG/Monopoly hybrid. One of the best TCG games around. 500+ cards, solid gameplay, good and tough AI. 50+ Hours | May not like TCGs. Poor graphics, and a near-useless storyline. | Any TCG fan owes it to themselves to play Culdcept Saga. Outside of that...Not many will enjoy the hardcore TCG/Board Game combo it has. |
| Enchanted Arms | 7.25 | Good grid-based combat system, nice pokemon-esque collect 'em character system w/ the Golums. 25+ Hours | Everything else screams ultra-mediocre. | It's a mediocre PS2 RPG with a few next-gen graphical parts. Worth a rent if you've played everything else. |
| Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom | 7.25 | Sweet JRPG take on Hack & Slash RPG-ing. Technical marvel w/ 50+ enemies onscreen. Tons of loot to be had. 4p Online makes it a gem. | Very boring on 1p mode...Forgettable storylines, even with the KUF lore. | Must-play if you can find 3 buds to go online with. Otherwise, not very fun by yourself. |
| Phantasy Star Online | 7.0 | Good combat system, and has some of the Phantasy Star lore behind it. It also has a decent MMO community still. 20+ Hours | Direct PS2 port in every way. SP campaign is short lived, and not that great. | SP Campaign isn't that amazing. Combat system saves an otherwise forgettable SP game. |
| Haven't Played: | Media Score: |
|||
| Spectral Force 3 | 62.3% | Seems like a mediocre SRPG, with a good combat system...Maybe a good Disagaea clone? | Could of been made on the PS2. Not well-enjoyed by media | Rent if you must get your SRPG fix. |
| Operation: Darkness | 50.3% | Quirky WW2 SRPG/Strategy game. Combat, at points, is interesting, as is the story line. | Difficult to work with the camera, and very hard game to beat, thanks to unbalanced mechanics. | Same as SF3...Rent if you must play an SRPG. Otherwise, may not be worth time. |
| Coming Soon: | ||||
| Infinite Undiscovery | Sept 2nd | Good open-world ARPG combat system, and tons of unique gameplay mechanics. | Short, and filled with technical flaws. 18 Characters make some characters seem uninspired. | Looking forward to this one. Looks like a must-play, despite 70.3% avg. from 3 reviews. |
| Zoids Assault | Sept 9th | Best SRPG of the Atlus trifecta of SF3, and O:D | Not really saying much to be the best out of crappy SRPGs, eh? | May be your best SRPG fix on the 360 this year. |
| The Last Remnant | Nov. | Actual S-E built JRPG...Good combat system, and interesting character development, progression, and acquisition. | UE3-developed game. May suffer from technical flaws. | Could be a better version of IU. Who knows? We'll see in November |
I think that's it for now?
Generally, the 4 best RPGs are going to be the top 4 I listed. It depends on your JRPG preferences. By all means, get LO and ToV first, as they seem to be the best of the ATB and real-time JRPGs currently. I have both, and can vouch for how good they both are.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
