If it sells based on hype then that doesn't mean it's a niche game (because niche games don't sell on hype), that means it's mainstream.

 

It's a mainstream game from an arguably niche genre, which is relatively rare.

That's where these arguments stem from. However, I'd disagree, by saying that the presence of these mainstream examples make the genre mainstream, however that doesn't change the fact that many casual and mainstream gamers would be dissapointed with any jrpg that isn't FFVII, wheather they realize it or not.
