If you are connecting EXTERNALLY by SATA you are taking up your internal slot anyway (by just running a cable from the internal SATA connection) so other than for cooling purposes this serves NO point.
And AGAIN...any external drive hooked up to the PS3 via USB MUST be formatted in FAT32 format...it won't read it otherwise. The INTERNAL format of the PS3 drive is SONY PROPREITARY and allows for the larger file sizes.
