Ninja Gaiden II whipped my ass for about two months after I got it on launch day, but I couldn't put it down. I didn't play the first one, but I used to play the old ones all the time on the NES.
Usually when a game is that freakin' difficult (there is an achievement for dying a certain amount of times!!!) I give up on it, but the fighting in Ninja Gaiden II was so much fun that I just couldn't stop, and I thought the bosses were amazing.
SPOILER ALERT: I will never forget when I finally beat it. I spent two nights trying to get past the first stage of the last boss. When I finally figured him out, I REFUSED to stop until I beat him for good. In his final form, he is damn hard to kill, but I didn't want to quit the game and go to bed because I knew I'd have to go back to the beginning of the stage again. At one point that night, I fell asleep at the continue screen. I woke up and slapped myself in the face and hit continue. And that time I beat him by the skin of my teeth. I wanted to do a happy dance in front of my TV, but I was too tired, so I went to bed. But it sure felt good in the morning.
