My girlfriend's doesn't cost anything. But only because she got an assitanceship at her Grad school.
Which is basically where you work for the teacher for your books, tuition and a bit of money on the side.
And since what she's helping with is a research project. It helps her in general since more research is always good on your resume...
and she doesn't have to pay for rent because she lives with me. All and all she's got a good thing going right now.
