I fail to see how we disagree.
I should mention that in my orignial post I meant specifically chronic poverty. Like you said, for most who find themselves in sudden poverty, they get back on their feet fairly quickly. Those who are chronically poor are 9 out of 10 times victims of themselves. If anything, the fact that someone who lost everything can bounce back in a couple months speaks more to my point. Why are they able to bounce back? Is it work ethic, education, the ability to manage a budget?

For people who have been dealt a bad hand then yes the bolded statement is very much a fact. Rugged individualism I believe is what they called it which is best characterized by a man during the depression, holding a sign that says "I don't want a handout, I just want to work."
The worst thing about our welfare policy and workers comp is that so many ppl refuse to help themselves or blatantly lie about illnesses or injuries that prevent them from doing a job. Countless cases have been tried regarding the abuse of workers compensation in my local govt.
As far as Obama being compared to Mandela. You would be shot if you said that in the wrong place. Race should be a deciding factor in a presidential election. Don't think for second that the democratic party isnt going to use race as a means of getting votes (they already have) and frankly saying that Obama is the next Mandela is downright insulting to many ppl of all races.
