I would advise you both watch The Fog of War. Japan was already burnt to the ground. In fact the US chose Hiroshima and Nagasaki because they were relatively untouched specimins. Perfect locations to test the new weapon.
If you had any idea what the repurcussions were for nuclear fallout, ridiculously high cancer rates, deformities, etc maybe you would think its a little extreme for a response.
