I finished Law School this year (Cardiff Law School in the UK). My qualifications actually came through today :D
I studied:
Tort law.
Contract law.
Public law.
Foundations of English law.
Land law.
Criminal law.
Tort law (horrendous, avoid if possible).
Family law.
European Union law (actually good. I oppose our membership of the EU so it made for some interesting debates/discussions in class).
European integration, policies and politics (ditto).
British government and politics.
Italian government and politics.
It was alright. It's not as hard as some make out and I was able to skip all the optional classes (the lectures) and only attended compulsory ones (the tutorials and seminars). This meant I had to do more reading at home but I preferred it that way.
If someone asked me for advice before going to Law School in the UK I would say the following key points:
- Don't spend much time on essays or work that doesn't count towards your final mark. Only do what is required of you on these pieces of work and no more.
- Do the reading before class but also try to focus on the bigger picture from the reading. Some professors would set specific questions to answer before class or something rather than looking at the topic overall, you really shouldn't let this divert you from your core aim of learning the topic for the exams.
- Know what topics you will revise for the exams as soon as possible. Often you will be given a list of say 10 key topics you'll be learning over the course of the year but you'll only need to know (for example) 7 out of those 10 for the exam.
You wouldn't beleive how many people I knew would turn up for the exam having learnt all 10, when I will have learnt just 8 (7 minimum + 1 back-up just in case), in greater depth than they did and in less time.
