Or, they could not spend money buying exclusives, but spend it on internally developing a JRPG that they know is full of win.

They did. The company is called Mistwalker, and they have 2 awesome JRPGs in Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey.

With metacritcs of 79 and 78 respectively, "awesome" wouldn't be the word that I'd use to describe these games. Also I woldn't describe Blue Dragon's sales anywhere near awesome. Lost Odyssey did good though, 800k and running.

Oh, snap. I thought they were awesome when I played them. But if they averaged below 80 on Metacritic, I guess I really didn't enjoy them as much as I originally thought.

Yep.

Guess not.

Glad I could help you see the light.

See, the thing about Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey was/is that user reviews have been far more favorable than the traditional review websites.

Blue Dragon: #130 Reviewer Rankings. #42 User Rankings

Lost Odyssey: #110 Reviewer Rankings. #16 User Rankings

Is it just me, or does the comparison between reviewers and users seem a little odd?

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
