I'm quite certain he's saying that IS extremism, but that a christian taliban would be practically the same. It's why angry militant theocracies are a bad idea.

my point is more about his time frame than what is or isnt extremist. he mentions a progression happening over the past couple hundred years, but those things i mentioned go back to its founding.
