I wouldn't even say that the PS1 or PS2 had a monopoly on videogames. There were clearly plenty of alternatives (PC/N64/DC/XBOX/GC) and I wouldn't consider Sony to have had a monopoly for that time frame (1995-2006). I would say they were the clear top sellers but I wouldn't count that as being a monopoly....
