It's not gamebreaking(see CoD4) but it is important.
Its a nice feature in a game that can provide good coop play. It would have been idiotic in CoD4 where the whole single-player experience depended on scripted events. How would this work for coop play? And Killzone2 is if anything a CoD4 in the future at least from the gameplay perspective. So if you want coop go buy a game where this makes sense.
And yes there are gametypes where online play doesn't make sense. All adventures, games like Uncharted etc. This is different for FPS where multiplayer is a key-feature. But normally with special multiplayer maps that are very carefully calibrated.
