Tales of Vesperia is a strong anime-style Japanese RPG with a wide-ranging story, compelling characters and an intense real-time battle system that keeps you on your toes. Although it has a somewhat inconsistent visual style and is relatively low on graphical details, the character designs and animations are very good, and there’s a ton to explore in the world. The storyline isn’t breaking any new ground and begins to unravel somewhat at the end, but there’s power here, and the characters will definitely stay with you after the battle ends.

IGN Ratings for Tales of Vesperia (X360)

out of 10
8.0 Presentation
The scope is grand even if the story doesn’t always reach the loftiest heights. But the characters shine.

7.5 Graphics
Vesperia’s cel-shaded look is beautiful at times and a bit drab at others. The skits and somewhat washed-out anime cutscenes detract from an otherwise crisp look.

9.0 Sound
The songs and sound effects are excellent and the voice acting is usually great too. I still can’t get Bonnie Pink’s opening theme out of my head.

8.5 Gameplay
The real-time battle system keeps things interesting on the battlefield, while the Artes and Skills let you constantly evolve your fighting style.

8.5 Lasting Appeal
With a big world to explore, multiple characters to fight as and load of quirky things and places to discover, there’s a lot to revisit. Beat the game, and start an “Ex New Game" for more adventures.
