This is a rule of thumb that will usually apply. However, don't forget that Dante is a Capcom character, has guns, a rocket launcher, a sword, plenty of special moves and a goddamn electric bat guitar (DMC 3). Kinda like Kratos-Link, but then the opposite way around.

Mario has, like, what? Jumping power? He'll be dead before he even REACHES the superstar or fire flower he'd require to beat Dante. Dante can keep him at bay with his guns while slowly moving toward him, not giving Mario a chance to do anything, then initiate a sword combo culminating into his transformation into Demon Dante and his stopping time and multyplying using Quicksilver and Doppelganger style.

In other words, Dante is 100 times more bad ass than Mario and wins with two fingers in YOUR nose.

 

you can just have mario start teh fight with a star....or frog suit but thats another story

 

Those are bound to time limits. Using either Trickster or Quicksilver style would allow Dante to sit it all out until the opportunity arises and Mario's powerups stop working. Dante doesn't need anything special in order to kill Mario. In a very brutal way.
