PGR4, COD4, GTAIV, Civilization IV, Resident Evil 4, SWAT 4 and MGS4, where, in my humble opinion, far better than the others before them.
But there are counterexamples. Soul Calibur IV is weaker than the 1 and 2, DMC4 was a bit disappointing and Quake IV is shit in a tuxedo. More, Dead or Alive 4...DOA is gettin' shittier by the numbers, Worms 4, Simon the Sorcerer 4, Silent Hill 4, GT4... The list goes on. There are few honorable exceptions, but from my experience, most series go down the drain after the 2nd installment.
