I believe they said the phrase, "A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush" somewhere in the thread and I think that is why Microsoft won't make xbox live free. They had to make games for windows live free because only 5 people were dumb enough to pay for online play on pc. With the xbox, making live free might increase sales, would probably increase online spending (why would silver members by a multiplayer map pack when they couldn't use it?), and the influx of players could probably make for ample marketing sales opportunities, but they know right now they are making hundreds of millions through xbox live so they won't do it, though they should.
