Very interesting article.
I recently cancelled my gold subscription, as the only game I play online faithfully is Halo 3, and I haven't played that in forever, and I may not even play Gears 2 online if it's as bad as Gears 1 was (cheating).
But making it free would encourage me to buy more games that used Live (Battlefield) and they would be able to make up the lost revenue in software sales.
