Sony lost more money on the PS3 in its very first quarter after launch than the PS2 had made in profits over its six year life up until that point, and then some.

That is brave....What do you understand for better? Sales? Metacritic scores? Your opinion?
Most likely mass market appeal and the general consensus among the gaming community if I had to be pragmatic about the matter. In lieu of nothing else simply combine the list you provided to see who comes out on top in the most categories.
