I've said it and I'll say it again, Kojima clearly stated that Metal Gear Solid 4 is Snake's final chapter and the end of the series as we know it, so what were people expecting?
If you've played the other games before, you'll notice he tried to link every single plot hole from the others games as possible. Sure, sometimes it seems like he's shooting so many things at the same time that you literally want to recheck the cut scene just to be sure to understand everything, but once you link everything together, you'll think that he concluded the series in a very intelligent way.
Then again, I think you have to play the other games in order to appreciate what Kojima did. I know I did! ^_^
