They prob could have but they didnt have the brains or the innovation or the B***S to do it.
They must have thought it was 'too risky'.......you know, with the almost 2 year headstart with no next gen competitor in the market. I would be shaking in my overly priced suits if I was Mr. Gates, wouldn't you????
Get a grip, MS are on the way down, Google and Sony are mashing the American Giant.
