Actually, you can both play at the same time except for a few games that tie the download to the account, like Warhawk (basically the games that are also retail). Once you download the game, you can log into a different account (probably your main one) and play the game.
In fact, in games like Stardust, you can get different high-score lists for each account if you want to compete with family members or something. I think most of the PSN games do that, and retail ones for that matter (worked with Oblivion for me).
It's also cool because you can go to someone else's house and use your account to get high scores if you have shared your account on their system (remember only 5 shares or 5 total PS3s, whichever it is).
