The fact of the matter is, the vast majority of all 360s in circulation (those that even have a HDD) are 20GB drives, woefully inadequate for heavy digital distribution purchases beyond "arcade" sized games. And I do make the distinction of word purchase, as overall storage space is slightly less of an issue if most content on a drive is time sensitive data/files that will be deleted shortly after the initial use. But digital distro of DVD sized games simply isn't a genuinely viable alternative option for most 360 owners. The lack of original Xbox games on XBL following their introduction to the service only supports this notion. Maybe they're just not selling well (not surprising, considering the games can be bought for less, on DVD), but is anyone arguing that this once heralded addition to XBL is something that has definitely been moved to a back burner? Marketing full sized games only to 120GB HDD owners seems like a poor strategy considering that they comprise a minority percentage of the overall 360 market. It's ultimately an issue of consumer choice. Which platform offers the consumer the choices he or she wants most. Most people like hard media, whether it be for movies or games. When the issue of drive space becomes moot, digital distro for games becomes a legitimate alternative. |
Um, I think that Microsoft would jump at the chance to push more people to buy their overpriced HDDs. Come on Microsoft, sell me a 250 GB HDD for $300 please.
