Russia assumes (rightly or wrongly... most likely rightly) that the purpose is to allow the United States to free itself of MAD (mutually assured destruction) in case of a Nuclear arms engagement with Russia. The logical step for Russia would be to consider the equipment in such a defensive system to be a fair target regardless of what country it's in. And since the system is primarily for the purpose of a Nuclear arms exchange, they'll already be flying, so that very well might be what Russia is firing at those targets. It's monstrous and insane, but that's the nature of the beast, not Russia's response to it. The real lesson here is that we desperately need to reinstate the priority of nuclear disarmament to both the collective conscience and the highest political levels. |
