I don't think this is the move that will cripple Sony but rather reduce PS3's momentum and minimize the damage that is going to happen to the 360. So I say it's not actually backfiring. But rather it'll end up as nothing.
Big boost on both sides, software is going to sell hot on both platforms; except that they will still be losing on Japan but I guess they're not targeting that with a dead install base of 500k+.
Only ones who lose here are the believers. :C
