Both are appropriate, according to Merriam-Webster and Cambridge.

In English, there isn't so much right and wrong as common and uncommon. Someone with a degree in English would argue against that, but English degrees pretty much guarantees that the person knows nothing about communication. English is different than other languages of Europe because there is no official academy.

Roat or "Wrote" is uncommon (read: wrong) and ambiguous sounding. I have heard people say it this way, in the Mid west, but it's more of an accent then a pronunciation.
